Project Narrative
Driven by a client’s desire to establish a new type of cosmetology and esthetics school, this 12,000 sq. ft. interior renovation of a north Austin retail center challenges the accepted, but often unsuccessful, school model.
Unlike traditional cosmetology schools, all spaces were given equal design consideration. Such an environment reinforces the primary program requirement of linking the educational and technical aspects of the classroom with a professional salon experience. Though attractive to students, the result appeals equally to faculty and clientele.
Careful editing and organization underlie this appeal. A crisp white ceiling—once a maze of joists, pipes, ducts, and conduits—now serves as a quiet, well-organized backdrop to a mix of warm woods and glossy black. White walls further enhance this play between starkness and subtle warmth. The existing concrete slab—a mottled and blemished surface visible throughout—adds a final level of richness and consistency to the space.
